SMS and Text Messaging History of Mass Notification Systems

History of Mass Notification Systems

History of Mass Notification Systems
The concept of mass notification systems has its roots in the early days of public address systems, which were used to amplify the voice of a speaker and make announcements to a large group of people. Over time, these systems have evolved to include a variety of communication channels and technologies, including SMS text messaging, email, phone calls, and social media.

One of the first widely used mass notification systems was the Emergency Alert System (EAS), which was developed in the United States in the 1950s. The EAS was designed to be used by government agencies to send emergency alerts to the public over television and radio.

In the 1990s, the concept of mass notification systems was further expanded to include a variety of other communication channels, such as SMS text messaging and email. These systems were initially used for emergency situations, but have since been adopted for a wide variety of other purposes, including school closings, weather alerts, and other important announcements.

Today, mass notification systems are used by organizations around the world to send out emergency alerts and other important messages to a large number of people quickly and efficiently. They are an essential tool for ensuring that people are informed and prepared in times of crisis, and for keeping them informed about important events and announcements.

While at one point in time mass notifications were spread through the media; special alerts or mass notifications were broadcast on radio signals and across television stations. Today the most effective mass notification systems, involve text messaging. Text messaging is a passive way of quickly notifying individuals of an urgent or critical issue.

Most people keep their phones within an arms length through-out the day, and will receive mass text notifications and critical text message alerts immediately.  It is estimated that over 97% of text messages are read within 3 minutes of receipt. There is no other delivery or notification platform with that level of instant consumption.

Companies, organizations, municipalities and schools may send mass notifications for a variety of reasons, considering the consumption level and reach of text messaging it is the natural channel to communicate when time is of the essence.
